Alleged Disability Insurance Fraud Leads to Criminal Charges for Michigan Doctor
A Michigan-based physician, Dr. Rainna Furnari Brazil, is dealing with multiple criminal charges that originate from an alleged fraudulent disability insurance claim. Dr. Brazil, a resident of Sylvan Lake, was arraigned in the Oakland County yesterday. The charges brought against her include two counts of False Pretenses for amounts ranging from $20,000 to over $100,000, two counts of failing to file taxes, and one count of Insurance Fraud.
It is alleged that, from the year 2018 through to 2021, the 57-year-old doctor applied for and consequently received disability insurance payments from the Unum Life Insurance Company of America. Interestingly, during this period, she is said to have returned to her work as a physician, earning an income in excess of $300,000 in disability insurance payments.
The charges suggest that Dr. Brazil lied repeatedly to the insurance company, denying that she had returned to work in a professional capacity to earn a financial compensation. This degree of insurance fraud, Nessel pointed out, has harmful consequences for other insurance customers and those making honest claims.
The bond granted to Dr. Brazil stands at $25,000, with a probable cause conference lined up for the 14th of March.
