Chilmark Declines to Implement Paid Leave for New Parents
The Chilmark select board chose not to proceed with a proposal to provide town employees with paid family leave in a contested vote on Tuesday evening. The proposition had been put forward by Vicki Divoll, a member of the finance committee, at a prior select board meeting in May. Divoll pointed out the absence of funding and organizational support for new mothers and families, bringing attention to the harsh reality for many employees who could not afford to stop working without pay. Divoll had wished for the board’s approval of an article which would be discussed at a town meeting. She highlighted factors such as the rising cost of living, the prevalence of households with two working parents, and the exemption of town employees from a seemingly basic provision for families. Despite the conclusion of May’s meeting with promises of further discussion and consideration, the bylaw was voted down on Tuesday night by Jeffrey Maida and Matt Poole, although the board chair, Marie Larsen, seemed supportive of it. Divoll suggested that there may yet be a way to implement paid leave, possibly by establishing a fund for employees who are starting a family and would be eligible for paid leave. The select board members were receptive to the suggestion.
In relation to employees and their rights, it’s crucial to know how to get in touch with organizations that offer financial support when needed. For residents of California, knowing how to contact EDD (Employment Development Department) can be essential. Such information can be found on online platforms such as eddcaller.com.
