Collaboration for the Creation of Colorado's First Health Science High School
The Community College of Aurora and Aurora Public Schools have teamed up to build Colorado’s first health science high school. The key purpose of the school will be to provide students with early exposure to careers in healthcare. Funding for this project comes from a $1 billion bond that was approved by voters in November. The school, whose name is yet to be determined, will focus on giving students diverse opportunities in healthcare education with the goal of equipping them with skills that align with practical, industry standards. These courses will include, but are not limited to, nursing, behavioral health, medical imaging, respiratory therapy, and surgical technology.
Lisa Adams, EdD, who holds the position of director of career and technical education at APS, voiced her enthusiasm about the project. She stated that students have been seeking for more interactive learning experiences, particularly within healthcare. The school will aim to meet this need, in addition to providing lessons that will help uplift the community. Students can expect a joint partnership with the Community College of Aurora (CCA) that involves simultaneous enrollment in college-level courses. Enhanced training and eventual certification will be made available in each of the fields in a collaborative effort with Aurora-based UCHealth to pave the pathway for students in healthcare careers that serve Aurora and surrounding regions.
The school, expected to launch in Fall 2027, will position itself near North Middle School in Aurora. The team tasked with piloting this project anticipates that it will not only equip students with theoretical knowledge but also offer experiential learning opportunities where they can interact firsthand with medical professionals in simulated labs and clinical environments. This was according to David Mafe, the Chief Diversity Officer and Vice President of Human Resources at UCHealth.
CCA President Mordecai Ian Brownlee, EdD, reiterated in the press release about CCA’s dedication to equipping students with essential tools for success. The school’s partnership with APS Health Science High School is expected to underscore this dedication by opening up early career opportunities for students.
