Convicted: Duo Faces Sentencing for Ten Years of Social Security Fraud
A Lead couple, Jason Lee Stokes, 48, and Tami Lee Stokes, 52, found guilty of Conspiracy to Defraud the United States, have been sentenced to prison and ordered to pay $211,564.17 in restitution. The charges originate from manipulation of the Social Security Administration (SSA) between 2013 and 2023. Jason Stokes applied for Social Security Title II Disability Insurance Benefits in December 2012, claiming he could not work due to illness, while he was actually healthy. He camouflaged his employability by registering his self-employment as a construction contractor under his wife’s name. Jason and Tami systematically lied to the SSA about his disability for years to collect $166,458 in Title II benefits.
In addition, Jason and Tami also obtained Title II benefits on behalf of their minor dependent child totaling $43,042. Over the decade, the family received $209,500 in disability benefits. Throughout this time, they purchased luxury items, took international vacations and pursued outdoor activities. The scheme was busted in 2022 when a doctor found Jason’s physical condition inconsistent with his reported impairment. Surveillances revealed Jason was seen enjoying common activities, defying the alleged disabilities.
In October 2023, the Stokes were indicted on counts of Theft of Government Funds, Conspiracy to Defraud the United States and False Statement, to which they pleaded guilty. Tami Stokes received a prison sentence of 15 months while Jason received an 18-month sentence. Post their imprisonment, both will be under supervised release for the next three years.
