Doctor from Michigan Accused and Charged with Fraudulent Acquisition of Disability Benefits
Dr. Rainna Furnari Brazil, a 57-year old osteopathic physician from Sylvan Lake, Michigan, has been formally charged with stealing several hundreds of thousands of dollars through fraudulent disability insurance claims. This news was revealed by the Michigan Attorney General’s office. Brazil stands to account for two counts of false pretenses for over $100,000, one for over $50,000 but lesser than $100,000, and another for over $20,000 but less than $50,000. In addition to these, she faces two counts for failure to file taxes and a count of insurance fraud.
Brazil had initially gotten on the disability insurance payment roster after she applied for assistance from the Unum Life Insurance Company of America. However, in violation of the claim’s condition, Brazil resumed employment while misleading the insurance firm about her job, enabling her to rake in over $300,000 between 2018 and 2021. Attorney General Dana Nessel expressed gratitude for the Department of Insurance and Financial Services’ vigilance and its referral of the case for judicial prosecution. Brazil is slated to attend court on March 14.
