The New Mexico Economic Development Department has disbursed $2.3 million in grants to boost economic opportunities and foster improved access to outdoor recreation across 14 counties. The funding, awarded under the EDD’s Outdoor Recreation Division’s fourth and final round of Trails+ Grant for the financial year, is projected to create an estimated 169 jobs. Ranging from public safety enhancements, ADA trail improvements, to restoration in fire-damaged regions, these diverse projects will be beneficial to different communities.

Since its inception in 2019, the Trails+ Grant has been instrumental in promoting better outdoor access and fostering stewardship of New Mexico’s natural resources. It has infused investment worth $28.7 million across a vast geographical spread covering 30 counties and 11 tribal communities.

Successful recipients of the grant include the Arroyo Seco Community Center in Taos County, Boy Scouts of America in Colfax County, Cavern City Trail Keepers in Eddy County, the City of Albuquerque, the City of Clovis, and Global Opportunities Unlimited among others. The grants are designed to help these entities develop various recreational and educational resources such as fitness trails, restored walking paths, informational signages, trailheads, park improvements, shooting range enhancements, and restoration of pathways affected by natural disasters.

The opening of the first round of applications for the FY26 Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant, which has $11.6 million in funding, is scheduled for July 1, 2025. Interested applicants can access more information on www.NMOutside.com.
