The Employment Development Department (EDD) of California recently announced the awarding of nearly $9 million to 11 organizations to develop projects aimed at training farmworkers for new career paths and generating higher wages. EDD Director Nancy Farias stated the organization is proud to support farmworkers and their families via these funds that will enhance career advancement opportunities. A sum of almost $1.8 million was awarded to three organizations serving Kings County - Binational of Central California, West Hills Community College District and State Center Community College District.

The participating organizations are expected to work closely with industry professionals to set up training programs aiming at developing skills such as mathematics, English language, communications, digital skills, conflict resolution, critical thinking and agriculture software training. A comprehensive range of support services will also be offered, including case management, career and financial coaching, and resources related to health, housing, and education. The awarded funds are discretionary and were made available via the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act to the office of Governor Gavin Newsom and are being administered by EDD and the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency.
