The Kentucky General Assembly is progressing with legislation that will establish voluntary paid family leave insurance in the state. The measure, currently before the full House, is being championed by GOP Representative Samara Heavrin of Leitchfield. While the legislation carries no mandates for employers, workers, or families, businesses have the opportunity to purchase this insurance and then provide it to their employees. This coverage is designed to support families during critical periods such as new arrivals and sickness, and includes provisions for adoption.

Heavrin says this form of insurance is similar to disability coverage, in that it provides financial protection for families during times of absence from work. Any offered products would need to be authorized by the Kentucky Department of Insurance.
