Essential Requirements for an EdD Program
The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree program at the University of Wyoming offers essential preparation for careers in scholarly inquiry and professional leadership in the educational field. The coursework is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of education to equip individuals for leadership roles. This program targets individuals who seek professional growth in education without intense research prerequisites.
Admission prerequisites include a master’s degree and at least three years of early childhood to grade 12 teaching experience (exceptions apply for the Educational Administration – Adult & Post Secondary and Instructional Technology cognates). Apart from these, international students require a minimum TOEFL score of 540 written or 76 online, or an IELTS score of 6.5. Other application requirements and deadlines are program-specific.
Each doctoral degree requires at least 72 semester hours beyond the bachelor’s degree level. Although additional credits are typically needed for each program concentration, students can transfer up to 30 semester hours from a similar master’s degree program.
The program consists of organized coursework, along with an applied professional experience, which is customizing according to the student’s needs. Graduates are expected to complete an initial examination and a project within the major area of professional specialization. The project involves practical research in the field of leadership.
This program is delivered through various distance modalities such as online and video conferencing. A few courses may require physical presence on the Laramie campus; such sessions will be scheduled to accommodate distant learning students. Students have to complete the program within eight calendar years and are advised to complete their preliminary examination within the first four calendar years.
The Doctor of Education program encourages students to apply research practices to scrutinize important educational leadership topics. The projects are problem-oriented and may involve evaluating curriculum, conducting professional development, and creating solutions for local settings. The committee evaluates all projects, and students are also expected to self-evaluate.
