Experienced ex-Police Officer Appointed as Head of NDIS Commission
Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has appointed Mr. Michael Phelan as the interim acting commissioner of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, as announced by NDIS Minister Bill Shorten. Phelan, a veteran in leading prominent criminal research and intelligence bodies in Australia, is set to utilise his comprehensive expertise in fighting fraud in his role expected to last for an initial term of three months. Before his appointment, Phelan held leadership roles as the CEO of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission and the director of the Australian Institute of Criminology.
His appointment aligns with the government’s firm commitment to safeguard NDIS participants from fraudulent activities. The appointment also aligns with ongoing significant reforms within the NDIS. With a deep-rooted background in law enforcement, Phelan will play a significant role in assuring participant safety and leading provider regulations.
The Australian government has underscored its commitment to enhancing the NDIS with strategic initiatives like the Crack Down on Fraud Program, the Fraud Fusion Taskforce, and the NDIS Provider and Worker Registration Taskforce, which Natalie Wade leads. These initiatives aim to improve the NDIS’s sustainability and participant-focus.
Phelan’s appointment forms a critical part of the government’s broader strategic plan to shield the NDIS from exploitation. The government is planning an open recruitment process to permanently fill the commissioner role. The transition to Phelan’s leadership begins on March 12, which coincides with the commencement of the current commissioner’s leave.
