Former Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser has filed a lawsuit against HCC Life Insurance Company for $680,000 over unpaid disability benefits. The case, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, alleges a breach of a professional hockey player’s disability insurance contract. The lawsuit aims to compel HCC Life Insurance Company to pay long-term disability benefits as per the agreement, account for their actions, and cover attorney fees and costs incurred due to their lack of compliance.

DeKeyser began suffering from pain in his left foot, lower back, and leg in October 2019 and had subsequent back surgery that same year that led him to miss the rest of the season. Despite trying to return to professional hockey in 2022, worsening health issues from his back injury hindered his ability to do so. Consequently, the Wings decided not to renew his contract upon its completion. DeKeyser is currently employed as a real estate agent in Macomb County.
