First Decline in Local Unemployment Rates in Almost Six Months
For the first time since September of the previous year, the unemployment rates of Stanislaus and Merced counties did not rise, as per the preliminary data provided by the State of California Employment Development Department (EDD). In March, Stanislaus County’s unemployment rate was 7.4%, meaning approximately 18,600 individuals were without work. This is a decrease of over 1,200 since February. Similarly, Merced County’s unemployment rate dropped from 12.2% in February to 11.5% the following month, making about 14,100 people jobless in that region.
The local statistics compare to state and national levels. The United States had a 3.9% unemployment rate, while California posted a figure of 5.3% last month. In total, approximately 1.32 million Californians remain unemployed, according to the EDD.
Stanislaus County experienced growth in four sectors: health care and social assistance, local government education services, goods producing, and farming. In contrast, Merced County saw over 300 farming workers lost, though the unemployment figures improved through government jobs, private education, health services positions and retail jobs.
Regardless of the increased employment in certain sectors, the demand remains strong in both counties. There are currently many open positions in health care, social assistance, and manufacturing.
