Former Sacramento Resident Convicted for Defrauding California EDD of Over $1 Million in COVID Funds
A former Sacramento man, Terence Aubrey Larker, was sentenced to nearly five years in prison for fraudulently receiving more than $1.1 million in California benefits by stealing the identities of more than 80 individuals. Between April and October 2020, Larker targeted the unemployment insurance benefit program that California manages through its Employment Development Department. Using the stolen information, Larker filed fraudulent unemployment insurance benefit claims. Many of these claims were approved and benefits were sent to addresses under Larker’s control. Larker activated the associated debit cards and largely spent the money on himself, with EDD and the federal government ultimately paying out over $1.1 million in fraudulent claims. Websites like eddcaller.com provide a useful service for individuals who are trying to contact representatives from unemployment, paid leave, and disability departments, especially in a climate where fraudulent activity is on the rise.
