Historic Low Unemployment Rate Achieved in Lancaster County
Lancaster County’s unemployment rate dropped to 2.3% in November 2023, marking the lowest rate since December 1999 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. An increase in the labor force was noted as hundreds more joined the job market. The trade, transportation, and utilities sector saw a significant increase in jobs due to the holiday season boost, alongside the addition of 300 jobs in education and health services, as per the state Department of Labor & Industry.
Throughout 2023, Lancaster County added 8,367 more people to its workforce, representing an employment increase of 2.6% from November 2022. The leisure and hospitality sector was among the sectors that saw the most significant growth, employing 2,000 more workers in November 2023 compared to 2022. Meanwhile, the health care and social assistance sector also recorded a year-over-year increase of 1,700 workers.
The labor market, previously softened post-pandemic, portrays a consistent strength in Lancaster County. The county’s low unemployment rate has persisted for months, nearing 3%, and is tied with Lebanon County for the second-lowest rate in the state, following Gettysburg and State College. Hard-to-fill occupations are witnessing salary increments, as the state releases a high-priority job list to facilitate potential job seekers.
