A new report from the International Labour Organization (ILO) indicates that while the labour market has shown resilience despite decreasing economic conditions, recovery from the pandemic remains unsteady. The report, titled World Employment and Social Outlook Trends: 2024 , shows that both the unemployment rate and the job gap rate have dropped below pre-pandemic levels. However, a raise in global unemployment is anticipated in 2024. A discrepancy in job gap rates and unemployment rates between high-income and low-income countries still exists, reflecting persisting inequality. The report also highlighted a growth in the number of workers living in extreme and moderate poverty in 2023. The ILO report warns of increased income inequality, and predicts the rate of informal work in 2024 to remain stable, accounting for 58% of the global workforce.
