Increase in Unemployment Rates in Rome/Utica over the Last Year
The unemployment rate in the Utica/Rome area increased from 3.3% in November 2022 to 3.7% in November 2023. The rate in October was 3.6%. Over the year ending November 2023, the number of non-farm jobs decreased by 100, or -0.1%, in the Utica-Rome metro, to 122,900. Private sector employment declined by -500, or -0.5%, to 93,000. However, there were gains in private education and health services (+800) and government (+400). Sectors such as trade, transportation, utilities (-600), manufacturing (-400), mining, logging, construction (-200), and financial activities (-100) saw a drop in jobs.
In terms of rankings among New York’s 62 counties for the unemployment rate in November 2023: Oneida County stood at 29 with a 3.7% rate, Herkimer County ranked 36 with a rate of 3.9%, Lewis County was at 46 with 4.1%, and Madison County secured the 20th spot with a 3.5% rate.
