Intel Corp., the semiconductor company, has laid off nearly 2,000 employees in California over the course of a year. According to notices given to the California Employment Development Department (EDD) by Intel spokesman Marc Nadler in November, the company laid off 235 employees from its Folsom campus and 76 employees from Santa Clara offices on New Year’s Eve. The job cuts are a part of Intel’s strategy to reduce costs while accessing its multiple initiatives. Despite the layoffs, Intel still employs over 13,000 people in California, which is only a minor reduction from just over 13,500 in January 2022. The company has said that these are difficult decisions and they aim to treat impacted employees with dignity and respect. Prior notification of the redundancies is given at least 60 days before, according to the company’s communications to the EDD. Including these recent layoffs, Intel Corp. has laid off a total of 1,915 employees from December 2022 to December 2023. This includes 898 employees let go from the Folsom campus and 1,017 employees from the Bay Area, as per EDD data.
