Intel Corp. Dismisses Nearly 2,000 Employees from Folsom, Bay Area Offices Within a Year
Intel Corp, the semiconductor company, has confirmed the permanent layoff of around 2,000 employees from their branches in California within a year. As announced in Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices, 235 employees were dismissed from the Folsom campus and 76 from Santa Clara offices on New Year’s Eve. These layoffs were detailed to the California Employment Development Department (EDD) by Marc Nadler, Intel’s spokesman, in November.
According to Addy Burr, Intel spokeswoman, these actions are part of a cost reduction strategy, which includes cutting out certain specific business and function positions. However, Intel continues to invest in core areas of its business, including U.S.-based manufacturing operations. Despite the layoffs, the semiconductor giant still holds 13,000 employees in California, slightly lower compared to the 13,500 employees as of January 2022, as per data given on Intel’s website.
Intel assures its commitment towards treating its impacted employees with respect. All affected employees are informed about layoffs 60 days in advance, Nadler mentioned in his communication to the EDD. The data from EDD suggests that from December 2022 to December 2023, Intel dismissed 1,915 employees, incorporating 898 employees from the Folsom campus and 1,017 employees from the Bay Area. ABC10 reported most of the job cuts were related to various software development engineer positions.
