Joint Record Low Unemployment in Eurozone; Possible Bond Turmoil Due to UK Election - A Recap
The Eurozone unemployment rate exhibited a surprising decrease in November, dropping to a joint record low. Despite weak growth within the region, the jobless rate declined from 6.5% in October to 6.4%, matching the previous record set in June. A year earlier, the unemployment rate was 6.7%. Economists had anticipated no change in unemployment, as the economy shrank by 0.1% in the third quarter. During November, Eurozone unemployment fell by around 99,000. In the wider European Union, the unemployment rate eased to 5.9% in November 2023, from 6% in October. Factors contributing to this drop include an increase in employment expectations. Despite this, the region still struggles with a high rate of youth unemployment, with over 2 million young individuals unemployed.
