Latest Update: NBS Reports a Rise in Youth Unemployment to 7.2% in Second Quarter
This article reports that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) stated the unemployment rate among youth aged between 15 to 24 years increased to 7.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2023, up from 6.9% in Q1 2023. The overall unemployment rate in Nigeria also experienced a slight increase, going up to 4.2 per cent from 4.1 per cent. The collected data aligns with the International Labour Organisation guidelines and the unemployment rate is the share of the labour force who are not employed but who are actively searching and are available for work. In terms of educational attainment and employment, the unemployment rate was highest for those with post-secondary education, while most Nigerians run their own business or engage in farming activities. The NBS reported that the rate of informal employment in Q2 2023 was very high, at 92.7%. The rate of women in informal employment is higher than that of men.
