In their recent lawsuit against the Social Security Administration (SSA), the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and other relevant organizations, have alleged that the recent mass staffing reductions by the SSA have been unlawfully detrimental to Americans with disabilities who are reliant on Social Security services. Disability lawyer, John Heard, has indicated that there were already significant staffing issues within the SSA before these reductions. The process for getting approval for disability benefits was already taking an unprecedented eight months.

The deaf community has reportedly been struggling to secure Social Security income. For instance, a widowed deaf woman had significant difficulties when she could not find an interpreter at her Social Security office, and had to resort to using a young grandchild to act as an unofficial interpreter. However, the staff at the Social Security office were apparently unhelpful, which exacerbated the situation.

Some disability advocates believe that wasteful spending within the Social Security Administration may exist, but they want to see more informed decision-making to prevent the disability community from being overly impacted. Wendy Walker, vice president of the San Antonio Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, has remarked that the recent cuts lack transparency, and the cause and effect relationship has not been thoroughly investigated.

The lead plaintiff in the lawsuit, the AAPD, has claimed that approximately 30,000 people with disabilities died in 2023 while waiting for approval of their Social Security disability insurance applications. The SSA has not yet responded to these comments and allegations.
