An Oakland County doctor, Dr. Rainna Furnari Brazil, has pled guilty to eight felony counts related to a $400,000 fraudulent disability insurance claim. Authorities say Brazil applied for and was successfully granted disability insurance payments from the Unum Life Insurance Company of America, despite actively working as a licensed osteopathic practitioner during the same time period. Investigations revealed that between 2017 and 2021, Brazil had received over $400,000 in disability insurance payments.

According to the reports, Brazil lied to the insurance company, denying her active employment status as a physician. She pleaded guilty on Monday, October 8th, to three counts of false pretenses amounting to $100,000 or more, two counts of false pretenses valuing between $20,000 and $50,000, two counts of failure to file taxes and one count of insurance fraud.

As a component of her plea agreement, Brazil must pay a total of $458,962 in restitution. She reduces her sentence to a maximum of one year in jail by paying an additional $100,000 toward restitution during an 11-month deferred sentence period. The charges could further drop to false pretenses alone, with a sentencing range of 0 to 17 months, if full restitution payment occurs. Failure to pay at least $100,000, however, will lead to sentencing on all charges.
