Maine Enlists Colorado Software Company for $19.7 Million Paid Leave Portal Construction
State Senator Mattie Daughtry and Representative Kristen Cloutier celebrated as the Maine Department of Labor announced its partnership with FAST Enterprises, a Colorado-based software company. The company has been hired to construct an online contribution portal for Maine’s paid family and medical leave program. With the proposed cost of the project at $19.7 million, the platform will allow employers to register their business with the benefits program, file quarterly wage reports, make payments, apply for a private plan substitution, and track personal contributions. The system will also cater to self-employed individuals and tribal governments enabling them to choose paid leave coverage.
A selection process resulted in five proposals with the cost proposals ranging from $17.7 million to $21.1 million. FAST Enterprises was chosen due to their past successful executions of similar software creation for the Maine Revenue Services and the Massachusetts Department of Family and Medical Leave. This paid family and medical leave program is set to guarantee eligible public and private sector workers to take up to 12 weeks of paid leave for reasons such as illness, care of a loved one, or the birth of a child. Starting from January 2025, employer contributions will commence, accumulating over time to cover administrative costs and future benefit payouts by May 2026.
The Maine Department of Labor’s focus is on developing a user-centric, intuitive, efficient system to interact with Maine’s Paid Family Leave Program. They have begun drafting rules which outline defining factors like exemptions and other parameters on when and how the program applies. Feedback on these draft rules is open for concerned parties till July 8, via mail or an online form.
For those curious about how to get hold of paid family leave or potentially get in contact with a live service representative, procedures can often differ by state. For residents in California, for example, contacting EDD (Employment Development Department) may prove helpful.
