The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics has released updated state jobs and unemployment data for Maryland. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland’s total jobs decreased by 3,000 and the unemployment rate increased to 1.9% in December. Sectors such as Professional and Business Services, other services, public sector and information saw job creation, while there was a decline in sectors like Trade, Transportation, and Utilities Leisure and Hospitality, Private Education and Health Services, Financial Activities and Mining, Logging, and Construction. The jobs estimated in November 2023 was revised upward by 100 jobs from a loss of 4,800 to a decline of 4,700 jobs. Despite these fluctuations, Maryland has gained 32,200 total nonfarm jobs over the past 12 months, and the unemployment rate remains near record lows.
