The Best Place for Working Parents, in partnership with Empactiv Analytics, has released a National Trends report revealing a decline in company provisions for maternity leave since 2019. The report reviewed the implementation of over ten family-friendly policies in over 2000 businesses of various sizes across the United States, employing more than 3 million people. Maternity leave was the only policy to have declined, reaching its lowest at 72.9% between March 2020 and April 2021 from a pre-COVID level of 82.2%. The decrease indicates a rising concern for working mothers and underscores the urgency for workplace support to tackle the mounting mental health crisis. The report suggests that smaller businesses are leading in innovation around supporting working parents, with micro-sized entities showing a slight increase in offering maternity leave benefits. The study indicated that paid leave reduces job quitting rates among first-time mothers and increases their chances of returning to the same employer. The report also revealed an unexpected trend: male-dominated sectors such as the motor vehicle industry are more likely to offer maternity leave than female-dominated ones, like healthcare. The report concludes that family-friendly benefits are essential for attracting and retaining a productive workforce and underscores the urgent need for enhanced support for working mothers.
