Nearly 48,000 individuals in Michigan are set to receive retroactive unemployment payments due to a decision taken under a new law. The law, which updated weekly benefit rates, was introduced earlier this year. The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency, UIA, modified payments to account for the difference between the previous and updated maximum benefit. The UIA reportedly listened to callers’ feedback, with many expressing gratitude for the additional financial aid during their job search.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer had signed a bill in December to escalate unemployment benefits, the first time since 2011. The updated rates came into effect on January 1, with weekly benefits increased from $362 to $446. However, the new rates weren’t enforced until April 2. To establish who was eligible for the raised payments, the state evaluated over 78,000 claims made from January 1 to April 1. Out of these claims, around 47,000 qualified for the additional financial support.

Those who are eligible to receive extra money can refer to Michigan Web Account Manager, MiWAM, for further details clarifying the increased payment. A written copy of these details will also be mailed to the address provided in their account.

A part of the new law includes continued increments in unemployment benefits over the next couple of years. By the start of 2026, the maximum weekly benefit will increase to $530, raising to $614 by the beginning of the following year. From 2026 onwards, the set amounts will be determined by the state treasurer based off federal data. The law also includes provisions that enable claimants to collect unemployment benefits for 26 weeks and changes to work reporting rules. Starting in July 2026, those who left work due to being victims of domestic violence will also qualify for benefits.
