New Money Network Prepaid Debit Cards Now Used for Benefit Payments, Announces California EDD
The Employment Development Department (EDD) started issuing payments for unemployment, disability, and Paid Family Leave customers on new Money Network prepaid debit cards since February 15, 2024. This change means benefit payments won’t be issued on Bank of America debit cards. The EDD has already communicated details of this change to its customers to help them transition to Money Network Cards. Notably, a direct deposit option will be introduced later in the year.
Those with active claims and qualified to receive benefits after January 15 were provided with a Money Network Card in anticipation of the shift. The card can take up to 14 business days from the qualification date to be delivered. For individuals who do not receive their card within this timeframe, they can reach out to Money Network on 1-800-684-7051. Further information about the usage of the Money Network Card is on moneynetwork.com/edd, which support instructions in 21 of California’s top languages.
Important to note, April 15, 2024, is the final day for usage of Bank of America debit cards in line with this transition. All existing balances should be used or transferred before then. For any remaining balance, a request may be lodged with Bank of America for a check of the equivalent amount.
The EDD ensures to communicate only via its official channels and has warned against scams requesting activation of a benefits debit card. Messages from EDD only link to websites carrying the edd.ca.gov. The Department is adamant in fighting fraud and urges customers to safe-keep their private and financial details.
Although the migration to the Money Network Card signifies a significant shift, the EDD continuously takes steps to improve the customer experience. The department is planning to introduce a direct deposit option and streamline processes under an initiative called EDDNext. This focus is on technological upgrades, more self-service options, simplification of forms and notices, and policy and procedural updates for team efficiency, all aimed at creating a faster and smoother experience for customers.
