SACRAMENTO – The Employment Development Department (EDD) honored mothers and maternal figures throughout California this Mother’s Day by shining the spotlight on the benefits of California’s Paid Family Leave (PFL) program. Introduced more than 20 years ago, this program allows eligible workers to receive benefits for up to eight weeks while bonding with a new baby or foster/adopted child, caring for an ill family member, or supporting a military family member while they serve abroad. Paid Family Leave assists California workers in prioritizing their families and be present for pivotal moments, EDD Director Nancy Farias said. Since 2004, when PFL was launched as the first of its kind in the nation, the EDD has paid over $17 billion in benefits, covering wage losses for workers who need time away to support their families. New claims in 2025 saw California boost Paid Family Leave and Disability Insurance benefits to 90 percent of regular pay for many workers – a significant increase that makes it much easier for Californians to take time off to care for loved ones. EDD offered an array of information, including a benefit calculator, to help individuals fully understand and utilize these benefits.

This Mother’s Day, EDD encourages pregnant and new mothers, as well as caregivers, to learn about the benefits of the Paid Family Leave program. For more information, visit the official website, https://edd.ca.gov/mothers.
