A class action lawsuit against Michigan’s unemployment agency has been concluded with the approval of a $20 million settlement. The case was brought about due to claims that several people were erroneously accused of unemployment fraud by an automated computer system, leading to wrongful garnishing of wages or seizure of tax returns. A total of 3,206 people qualified for the suite, with $5,159,693 calculated in total financial losses. All will be reimbursed in full, with an additional portion of the settlement money to be split evenly. Some claimants will receive hardship awards for significant difficulties experienced as a result of the accusations. The case has generated significant legal fees of around $6.6 million. The state of Michigan did not challenge the settlement.
