Paid Parental Leave to be Granted for Executive Branch Employees in Kentucky
Kentucky state employees serving in the executive branch are soon to become eligible for paid family leave, granting benefits to employees who have a child through adoption, foster care, or birth. Offering up to six weeks of paid parental leave from day one of employment, Kentucky’s move directly benefits the state’s estimated 30,000 executive branch employees.
The leave benefit can be accessed by employees in three tiers: from the first day to year 10 of employment, again between years 10 and 20, and finally between year 20 and the end of their career. Governor Andy Beshear sees the move as a necessary amendment to Kentucky administrative regulations to accommodate new parents and employees with serious health conditions. The proposed benefit is expected to come into force by summer of 2025.
National Library of Medicine research backs the move, citing significant postpartum mental health improvements, increased breastfeeding and infant immunization rates and decreased infant mortality rates following birth as major outcomes of such an initiative.
