The House Banking and Insurance Committee in Kentucky has passed a bill which would permit insurers to offer paid family leave insurance plans in the state. Introduced by Rep. Samara Heavrin, House Bill 179 is intended to address the needs of employers wishing to provide additional benefits to their employees. The proposed plans would include temporary wage replacement for workers caring for a sick relative, bonding with a newborn or adopted child, or caring for an injured family member in the military or first responder roles. The bill has been supported by the business community, including the Kentucky Chamber Center for Policy and Research. If enacted, insurers would be able to offer such policies voluntarily. The legislation could provide Kentucky with a competitive advantage; similar measures have been approved in at least six states. The bill has now moved to the House floor for consideration.
