Short-Term Disability Insurance Now Included in UAB-Sponsored Benefit Options
Starting from the 1st of April, 2025, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) plans to provide short-term disability insurance to its employees via Standard Insurance Company. The weekly benefits of this insurance will be provided to the eligible participants who suffer a covered disability. This insurance aims to provide a specific percentage of the covered employee’s income during their leave due to health issues or accidents like back pain, depression, cancer, or complications related to pregnancy and childbirth.
“We are pleased to introduce this benefit to our employees, said Chief Human Resources Officer Janet May. She explained that savings can be quickly exhausted and long-term financial security can be compromised when taking time off due to a disabling condition. Hence, short-term disability insurance can help maintain financial stability.
This insurance aims to aid with financial commitments and costs that health insurance does not cover, such as food, childcare, mortgage, or rent payments. To improve its service, Standard’s short-term disability insurance includes access to Health Advocacy Select service, a provision for a personal health advocate, who can provide guidance to navigate the healthcare system and understand the diagnosis, during the period the employee is on leave due to a claim.
If you want to enroll for UAB-sponsored voluntary short-term disability insurance, special enrollment will be open from March 17-26. After this special enrollment period, an extended benefit waiting period may be required. Visit the UAB for Me Benefits Portal during the special enrollment period to enroll.
