Social Security Includes 13 New Conditions to Compassionate Allowances List, Accelerating Disability Benefits for Critically Ill Americans
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is expediting the process to access disability benefits for those with severe medical conditions by adding 13 disorders to its Compassionate Allowances List. These enhancements are reported to affect applicants for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), who match the medical criteria for the newly listed conditions. The Compassionate Allowances List is created to speed up the acquisition of disability benefits for individuals with significant medical ailments, allowing them to bypass the customary lengthy approval procedure. This addition brings the total CAL list to include 300 severe conditions. The SSA reported that 1.1 million people with serious disabilities have been granted aid through this expedited process since its inception. Diseases newly added to the list include Au-Kline Syndrome, Harlequin Ichthyosis – Child, Pulmonary Amyloidosis – AL Type, Rasmussen Encephalitis, and Thymic Carcinoma among others. The SSA also disclosed that they are improving the Health IT program to expedite decision-making by digitally receiving medical records. SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano commented, We are persistently trying to improve our disability plans and serve citizens more competently.
