Spain's Unemployment Rate Drops Beyond Expectations
In December, Spain’s unemployment fell more than predicted, reaching its lowest level for the month since 2007, as reported by the labor ministry. Compared to the previous month, the number of unemployed decreased 27,375 or 1.0 percent, significantly higher than the expected decrease of 15,700. The total number of unemployed reached 2.71 million, this being the lowest for December since before the financial crisis in 2007. There was a decrease of unemployment by 25,158 in the service sector and by 1,965 in agriculture. In contrast, construction saw an increase of 5,285 unemployed individuals, and industry increased by 1,481. The data also revealed a record low for youth unemployment, with a decrease of 12,014 or 5.83 percent from the last month to 193,965. Despite international environmental uncertainties, the labor ministry deemed 2023 a significantly positive year for employment.
