2023 State Unemployment Benefits: Tax Statements Released by North Carolina
The N.C. Division of Employment Security announced that those who received unemployment benefits in 2023 can now download their 1099-G tax statements through their online account. Paper copies will also be mailed out to those who have requested them, with an expected delivery in early February. These forms detail the total unemployment benefits received in the previous year, along with any state or federal tax withheld. The 1099-G form is necessary for completing both state and federal tax returns, and unemployment benefits count towards a person’s income and must be reported on these returns. In the event of any inaccuracies on the 1099-G form, individuals can contact the customer call center at 888-737-0259. The DES has issued approximately 84,000 forms this year.
