Survey Reveals Majority of Michigan's Small Businesses Favor Paid Family and Medical Leave Policies
A new opinion poll demonstrates that a vast majority of small businesses in Michigan are in support of a national paid family and medical leave program. This program would be funded through equal contributions from both employees and employers. According to the survey, conducted by Lake Research Partners, 79 percent of these small businesses support the implementation of such a program. This program will ensure wage compensation for employees for up to 12 weeks of leave, bolstered by shared contributions from employers and employees.
John Arensmeyer, the founder and CEO of Small Business Majority, opines that the need for a standardized policy on family and medical leave is imperative, and should be implemented without further delay. Half of the small businesses in Michigan offer paid medical leave for serious health issues, while 41 percent offer some form of parental leave. However, these policies do not match up to the comprehensive leave coverage proposed under the potential nationwide program. Therefore, it is revealed that 84 percent of these businesses express the desire to offer more paid leave than they currently can afford.
Furthermore, 62 percent are more likely to support a universal paid family and medical leave program over a voluntary insurance program that businesses would opt into. The study also divulges that 54 percent of Michigan small business owners have had their employees take extended leave for numerous reasons, including caring for a newborn child or a family member with serious health issues. Many owners themselves have had extended absences to care for immediate or extended family members.
Small Business Majority and National Partnership for Women & Families, both Operation in Washington, D.C., have campaigned for more beneficial policies for women and their families since their establishments. The opinion poll was conducted among 110 Michigan small business owners, and has a +/- 9.3 percent margin of error.
