The Importance of Paid Family Leave
Paid Family Leave provides job-protected time away from work with partial compensation for eligible employees when they need to bond with a new child, care for a family member or assist a family member called to active military service. All workers, including adjuncts and student employees, who work in New York State, are eligible for Paid Family Leave, provided they meet certain criteria defined by New York State.
Benefits during Paid Family Leave will continue as long as required contributions are made. The usual payroll contributions for benefits will be deducted from the pay, providing there is sufficient amount to cover them.
In terms of payment, for leaves that begin in 2023, benefits are set at 67% of the average weekly wage, with a maximum of $1,131.08 weekly, which is 67% of the New York state average weekly wage. This percentage and maximum will remain the same in 2024, though the weekly benefit will increase slightly to $1,151.16. Payments can be arranged either via check or direct deposit.
Employees who are unable to report to work due to an absence must notify their immediate supervisor or the department head within one hour of their scheduled reporting time. This notification should be made via Prudential’s toll-free phone number, 1-877-908-4778.
Furthermore, employees can combine their Paid Family Leave with time off under the provisions of the Family Medical Leave (FMLA) if they meet eligibility requirements. Short term disability and Paid Family Leave in any 52-week period should not exceed 26 combined weeks.
For further information or to launch a claim, employees can contact Prudential at 877-908-4778 or 844-778-4255/TTY.
