A licensed osteopathic physician, Dr. Rainna Furnari Brazil, is scheduled to stand trial in Oakland County on the charges of fraudulent disability insurance claims. Brazil, a resident of Sylvan Lake, supposedly applied for and collected disability insurance payouts from the Unum Life Insurance Company of America. Despite her professional career as a physician, investigators discovered that Brazil had been receiving over $400,000 in disability insurance payments from 2017 through 2021.

According to reports, Brazil repeatedly lied to the insurance company, denying that she was receiving compensation for her work as a physician. On Tuesday, April 16, she was bound over for trial. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel commented that this level of alleged insurance fraud not only hurts other insurance customers and honest claimants, but also questions the integrity of the system.

The director of the department of insurance and financial services, Anita Fox, expressed concern over such activities as they increase the cost of insurance for all Michigan consumers and businesses. Fox underscored that disability insurance serves as an essential lifeline for Michiganders, and fraudulent activities related to such policies hamper its effectiveness.

If you suspect fraud in Michigan, you can report it online or call the Department of Insurance and Financial Services at 1-877-999-6442. The service is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
