Understanding the Importance of Social Security
Russell Gloor answers a question regarding ‘If a person can work while collecting Social Security disability benefits’ in his column ‘Ask Rusty’. Gloor confirms that the Social Security Administration (SSA) encourages those collecting Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits to attempt to go back to work if possible, allowing considerable leeway. The monthly income limit for those collecting SSDI benefits in 2024 is $1,550.
Gloor suggests contacting the SSA’s Ticket to Work program directly to protect the individual’s disability status and plan returning to work. This voluntary program assists those receiving SSDI benefits who wish to return to work without jeopardizing their benefits. It provides new career training opportunities and connections to potential employers, with no obligation to the beneficiary.
In addition to other support, the Ticket to Work program includes a Trial Work Period (TWP). TWP allows up to 9 months for the beneficiary to earn any amount without risking their SSDI benefits. The beneficiary can also request reinstatement of their benefits within the 5-year Trial Work Period if they become unable to work full time again due to their disability.
For additional guidance on returning to work, disabled persons receiving SSDI can contact the Ticket to Work program directly at 1.833-889-0108.
