Unveiling the Celebration of Diversity Mural: A Warm Welcome from Jacobs School
On February 22, 2024, the Jacobs School of Medicine at the University at Buffalo unveiled an impressive Celebration of Diversity mural. Created by visual artist Julia Bottoms, the mural measures 50 feet wide by 16 feet tall and graces the school’s second-floor atrium. The artwork features members of the Jacobs School community, reflecting the diversity and inclusivity of the school and its environment.
The idea for the mural was birthed out of discussions between Raul Vazquez, MD, a 1989 Jacobs School graduate, his wife, Toni Gaiter-Vazquez, EdD, a 1991 UB graduate, and the late Jonathan D. Daniels, MD, a 1998 Jacobs School graduate. These discussions emphasized the need for a vibrant depiction of the school’s changing demographics.
The mural depicts current students, residents, alumni, and community members, with particular focus on illustrating the flourishing diversity of the Jacobs School. The installation, fully funded by the Vazquez family, serves not just as an artistic statement but also a catalyst for dialogue about diversity, inclusivity, and the experiences of underrepresented individuals in the Medical field.
Ten models were carefully selected from the Jacobs School community to feature in the mural, and they represent a rich tapestry of cultural backgrounds and experiences. From Narayan Dhimal, who was born in a refugee camp, to Ifeoma Ezeilo, former president of the UB chapter of the Student National Medical Association. Each person’s presence communicates a shared dedication to an inclusive environment where everyone can flourish, reflecting the spirit of the Jacobs School.
In the context of creating an open and welcoming environment, it’s crucial for institutions like the Jacobs School to have efficient communication channels.
