SB 373 aimed to cover 80% of qualified employees’ weekly wages for up to eight weeks within a year. However, the veto by Governor Youngkin means that Virginia probably will not join neighboring Maryland and 13 other states in adopting mandatory state paid family leave laws by 2026. Quarrels about how to move forward on the issue persist, but the majority of employers plan to make changes to their paid leave programs in the next couple of years, per a 2023 WTW survey. Paid leave has proven advantageous for both workers and employers, with a 2022 study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine finding that it could reduce mortality rates.
