The announcement by regenerative farming specialist, Wildfarmed, regarding the launch of their bread range caught the attention of many this week. The company plans to present its own-branded products in Waitrose stores nationwide from May. The range made from regeneratively farmed flour will include bread rolls, sourdough, sliced white, and seeded loaves. Additional products like baguettes and packs of flour are geared for a June release.
Wildfarmed pledges that its bread is made from wheat traceable to its 100 growers. The products are cultivated without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides and alongside companion and cover crops aiding biodiversity, soil, and ecosystem health. Amongst the co-founders are DJ and Groove Armada member Andy Cato, radio presenter George Lamb, and Edd Lees.
In addition to partnerships with leading brands and retailers such as M&S and Ask Italian restaurants, Wildfarmed’s flour has received commendations from top independent UK bakeries and restaurants. The company’s inclusion in Waitrose holds promise for its nationwide availability.
Wildfarmed further provided details on its survey about consumer preferences related to pesticide-free ingredients and sustainability factors in purchasing bread. The company revealed its ambitious plan to collaborate with over 100 UK and French growers for its 2024 harvest according to its Wildfarmed Regenerative Standards. These standards which mandate that companion plants grow with the crops, livestock grazing is integrated with agriculture, and crop management relies on observation and nutrition rather than pesticides are audited by a third party.
Waitrose’s Oliver Chadwyck-Healy lauded the Wildfarmed partnership as it merges seamlessly with their nature plan and anticipates the huge consumer response once the loaves hit the shelves. A celebration of these sustainable ventures can be witnessed at the fifth annual Net Zero Festival hosted by BusinessGreen on October 22-23 at the Business Design Centre in London.
