Youngkin Urged by Legislators in Northern Virginia to Approve Bill for Paid Family and Medical Leave
Virginia State Del. Briana Sewell, alongside other proponents of House Bill 2531, gathered at Hitchcock Paper Co. in Occoquan to advocate for Gov. Youngkin to sign the bill reinforcing paid family and medical leave for Virginians. Sewell, a representative for Virginia’s 25th House District, was a key patron of the bill, which passed the Virginia General Assembly on Feb. 12. However, the similar bill proposed last year was vetoed by Gov. Youngkin, citing the burden it purportedly placed on families and businesses.
The draft bill approved in February proposed a paid family and medical leave fund subsidized by small contributions from employers and employees. This fund would guarantee up to 12 weeks of paid leave for individuals to care for a loved one with a severe illness, accommodate a new baby, or recover from an injury. The program would also ensure a wage replacement of 80% and protect workers’ jobs and access to health insurance during their absence.
Joining the two lawmakers at the event was Sarah Burzio, the owner of Hitchcock Paper Co., where the gathering was held. Burzio articulated her support for the paid family and medical leave program, noting the financial challenge for small businesses like hers in offering such a benefit.
Paid family and medical leave programs are unfortunately not accessible to about 3.4 million Virginians. Such legislation, if passed, could alleviate the burden many hardworking individuals face when a family crisis compels them to choose between caring for their loved ones and maintaining their livelihoods.
The governor’s office hasn’t responded to InsideNoVa’s request for comment on the legislation. The deadline for Youngkin’s action on legislation is 11:59 p.m. on March 24.
